Fertility After Miscarriage: How Long Should You Wait and What to Consider?

Fertility After Miscarriage: How Long Should You Wait and What to Consider?

Experiencing a miscarriage can be emotionally overwhelming and physically exhausting. For many individuals and couples, one of the first questions that follows is: When can we try again? The answer depends on several factors—including physical recovery, emotional readiness, and any underlying conditions that may have contributed to the loss.

How Soon Can You Try Again After a Miscarriage?

Medically, the body may be ready sooner than most people expect. In uncomplicated miscarriages (especially those that occur during the first trimester), ovulation can resume as early as two to four weeks after the miscarriage. That means it’s possible to conceive again within a month or two. However, many fertility specialists recommend waiting at least one full menstrual cycle before trying again to allow the uterine lining to recover fully and to help with accurate dating of a future pregnancy.

For later miscarriages or those that involve complications, surgery, or significant bleeding, your doctor may recommend waiting longer—typically two to three months or more—before trying to conceive again.

Emotional Readiness Matters Too

Physical recovery is only one piece of the puzzle. Miscarriage often brings grief, anxiety, and fear, and it’s important to acknowledge those feelings before moving forward. There’s no “right time” emotionally—it’s okay to take a break if needed, and it’s also okay if you feel ready to try again sooner than others might expect.

Discussing your emotional state with your partner, a therapist, or your fertility doctor can help you make a thoughtful decision about when to try again.

Should You Seek Testing or Evaluation After a Miscarriage?

If you’ve had one miscarriage, especially early in pregnancy, further testing may not be necessary. Miscarriage is surprisingly common, affecting about 1 in 4 pregnancies. In most cases, it’s due to chromosomal abnormalities that occur by chance and are unlikely to recur.

However, if you’ve experienced:

  • More than one miscarriage
  • A miscarriage after 12 weeks
  • Difficulty getting pregnant again
  • A history of infertility

…it may be a good idea to speak with a fertility specialist about further evaluation. Testing may include genetic screening, blood clotting studies, hormone panels, thyroid testing, or an assessment of the uterus.

Getting Pregnant After Miscarriage: What to Expect

Many people go on to have healthy pregnancies after a miscarriage. That said, it's normal to feel anxious or cautious when trying again. You may want more frequent ultrasounds or early monitoring to feel reassured—and that’s okay. Your care team can help guide you through the next steps with the right support.

If there are concerns about age, egg quality, or a history of pregnancy loss, fertility treatments like IUI or IVF may be considered to help increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of future loss.

Support and Next Steps

Miscarriage can feel like a setback—but it doesn’t define your fertility journey. Whether you're hoping to try again naturally or with fertility support, what matters most is having a plan that honors your physical health and emotional well-being.
