Understanding IVF Add-Ons: Do You Really Need PGT, Assisted Hatching, or Embryo Glue?

Understanding IVF Add-Ons: Do You Really Need PGT, Assisted Hatching, or Embryo Glue?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex process, and many clinics offer additional treatments—known as “add-ons”—aimed at improving success rates. Some of the most common add-ons include Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), Assisted Hatching, and Embryo Glue. But do you really need these extras? Understanding what each entails and when they might be beneficial can help you make informed decisions during your IVF journey.

What Is Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)?

PGT involves screening embryos for genetic abnormalities before transfer. This testing can identify chromosomal issues or specific inherited disorders, helping select embryos with the highest chance of implantation and healthy pregnancy.

Who benefits most?
  • Women over 35
  • Those with recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Couples with known genetic risks

What Is Assisted Hatching?

Assisted Hatching is a technique where the outer layer of the embryo (the zona pellucida) is gently thinned or opened to help the embryo “hatch” and implant into the uterine lining more easily.

Who might consider this?
  • Patients with previous IVF failures
  • Older women
  • Those with thick zona pellucida on embryos

What Is Embryo Glue?

Embryo Glue is a special culture medium containing hyaluronan, a substance thought to promote embryo attachment to the uterus.

Is it effective?
  • Research is mixed, but some clinics use it in patients with recurrent implantation failure to enhance implantation chances.

Should You Choose IVF Add-Ons?

IVF add-ons can increase costs and are not always necessary or proven to improve outcomes for everyone. Decisions about using these should be personalized based on your medical history, age, and previous IVF experiences.
